Common Questions from Parents:
Will my child become nearsighted?
Why should I care if my child is nearsighted?
What can I do to prevent my child from getting more nearsighted?
Unfortunately, myopia or better known as nearsightedness, is steadily increasing in our youth population. Genetics and the long hours of near work with computers and electronics are just some of the reasons. Blur is an immediate sign of a nearsighted prescription worsening but of more concern is the increase in risk of developing retinal diseases and glaucoma as a prescription reaches a certain level.
These changes normally happen during our childhood years. Early in most current day eye doctors careers, we didn't have many options available to slow or stop the progression of nearsightedness. Luckily, as medicine and research has continued, we now know we have options for our patients to interfere with the nearsightedness worsening process.
With such treatments as drops, Orthokeratology, or specialty designed soft contact lenses we are making a huge difference in the health of our nearsighted patients. Dr. Harris has been working for many years with kids and parents to slow down or stop the myopic process and ensure we are providing the best eye health for children as they grow into adulthood. We can work together to prevent myopic diseases for our children!
